Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar Choultry
Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar Choultry

The Rajah Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar choultry in front of Central Station was built in 1884 as a rest house for travellers. The building which is notable for its aesthetic and cultural values is one of the structures mandated to be preserved by the High Court.  Now it is on its last stand against ‘development’. God only knows what lies in store!

This picture of the 85-year-old Sarafaly building on Broadway (Popham’s Broadway, or Prakasham Salai) was taken by me 4 years ago. Even at that time, it was rundown, sealed and silently awaiting the onslaught of the bulldozer. Wonder what is it’s condition now!

The building still stands!
