It was Sunday morning. Most shops on Pondy Bazaar were closed for the day or yet to open. This cleaner was already at work precariously perched to clean the facade of a well-known garment store, Naidu Hall.
Naidu Hall was established in 1939 and was noted for ladies’ innerwear at a time when they were ‘unmentionables’. Over the years they have added a comprehensive range of garments for the whole family and also have undergone some rebranding exercises.
Another thought that enters my mind is the utter disregard we have for occupational safety in such situations. While this worker has some rudimentary safety harness, most workers work without any safety harnesses or with only very rudimentary rigs.
