Pinman for laundry

During my college days in the 1960’s, there were many local laundries in Madras which went under the general category of Pinmen. I could never fathom the etymology of this name. My father once told me that it was perhaps derived from the idiom, ‘Neat as a pin”.  I wasn’t convinced.

Most pinmen (plural of pinman !) have almost vanished, giving way to some swanky launderers and dry cleaners.

I was happy to see one Pinman still surviving with the same name on RK Mutt Road, Mylapore.

Incidentally, RK Mut Road was then called Broadies (Castle) Road.
