Cultivating savings habits in children through the use of piggy banks were effective when the coins had some value. Today, with inflation, the value of coins have eroded and the use of small piggy banks (undiyals) have almost disappeared.
So, these colourful, fruit-shaped piggy banks made a pleasant sight and a photo op. at a potter’s wayside stall.
Who knows, with the government introducing higher value coins these clay ‘undiyals’ will have more takers.
