During our morning photo walk in Pallavaram recently, we saw some donkeys and their foals tied on the roadside with their keepers waiting by their side. On enquiry, I came to know that they were selling donkey’s milk. The lady here sells a small thimble-like cup of milk for Rs200.
There is a belief among some people in Tamil Nadu that feeding an infant with donkey’s milk give the child strength, immunity and a good voice (?!). There is no scientific evidence of this. At best it may be as good mother’s milk, but scientist and neonatologists warn against feeding newborns with this milk. There could also be hygiene issues. Despite such advice, this practice seems to continue.
The donkeys seem to come from a dhobi ghat nearby.
